I’m Going on a Bender

Watch out, it’s time to get toasted.

Quit rolling your eyes.  I’m serious this time.  I know I’m not much of a drinker, but I need to change my ways soon.

OK, OK, I admit it.  I’m not going to be throwin’ em back any time soon. I just need to start drinking more WATER.   I rarely drink soda or juices, and water is what I usually reach for, but I just don’t drink enough of it.

I blame it on my Mom.  Seriously.  Lebanese people rarely drink with their meals, so I was just raised that way. You drink before or after, but not during. So I normally finish eating and then just forget about it.

It became apparent to me the last two weeks on the bike.  My heart rate was through the roof during all of my intervals (I’m talking 180-185!) — unnecessarily so.  And I couldn’t figure it out. Am I losing fitness? What the heck?  You’d think I would know, since I’ve been through this before. In fact, my coach, Matt Russ, wrote an article about Morning Hydration a couple years ago when he first experienced my camel-like ways. Click HERE to read it.  I guess I’m a few fries short of a Happy Meal, because I keep making the same mistakes.

Finally I had a good ride last Sunday morning (with the exception of the little aforementioned road altercation) due to getting drunk on water all Saturday night (I was wild!), and then forcing myself to drink a few glasses before I left the house Sunday morning.

It’s usually the most simple, dumbed-down stuff that can move us forward.   Changing habits is tough though!  So I’m curious . . . How much water do you guys drink a day?   Not soda. Not beer. Not juice.  WATER.

Bring on the peer pressure.  I may have survived four years at Arizona State without doing a beer bong, but I think that you guys can drive me to drink.

  1. Hey Amy!
I drink at least 2 liters a day (I think that is a bit over 64 oz), and on top of that I add water when I am training…

  2. I suck at drinking water. Vodka I can do, water.. notsomuch. I was swelling up huge (think cankles) after long runs/rides while IM training.. then someone told me to drink more during the workout. Voila! Problem solved. Duh.

Here’s to drinking more.. good luck!
